I’m dying!… and doing this.

July 27, 2009 · 4 Comments

I’m dying everyday… but in a good way. Like this weekend, that was some of the best dying I’ve done in a long time. It was better than dying in my sleep or even after meeting Barack Obama.

Larry King wants details!

April 23, 2009 · 1 Comment

I wasted 1 minute today. Larry King interviewed Levi Johnston (the young Alaskan that impregnated Sarah Palin’s daughter). I read the story and a little bit of the transcript before I had to stop. Larry King… are you serious?

Hike

April 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

“Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries,” lyrics by Lew Brown, music by Ray Henderson (1931)

People are queer, they’re always crowing, scrambling and rushing about; Why don’t they stop someday, address themselves this way? Why are we here? Where are we going? It’s time that we found out.

Taking a respite from the rat race via hiking offers oppurtunity to find the answers to these and other burning questions.

I really like Storycorps. People interview each other. The truth and emotion in every story is palpable in their voices and it always leaves me touched. You can find Storycorps at NPR.org.

Here are a few stories I like….

This story is about Mrs. Divine. I love these voices.

This  one is in honor of MLK day. I’ve shared this one with my students.

This next one is a granddaughter interviewing her grandfather. Towards the end the grandfather says, “I think when we got married, we made all new tracks and we never stepped in any old tracks. I want you to do the same thing. Live with courage.”

Love Potion # Yes!

January 19, 2009 · 2 Comments

Dear Jessica,

I’m a man who falters when it comes to goals – sometimes. Thank you for holding me accountable.

With love,

Jeffrey

 Entry::

Love,  a many-splendored thing. Love, a many-stupid thing too! Yes, love can feel like a thousand wonderful butterflies but it can also make you act a little foolish when you go out of your way to impress someone who isn’t all that impressive. Worse, your efforts in love can make you feel gruesomely embarrassed. Even worse, love could leave you heart-broken. Achk!

Think/Act with your brain, not your heart – Doable but mostly impossible.

Enter -> Human innovation! We as a species are on the crest of figuring out those chemicals in the brain that cause us to fall in love and, sometimes, fall in stupid. This discovery leaves open the possibility of not only a love potion but an anti-love potion too! This may give our brains a fighting chance before our hearts fall too hard.

Here’s the story as found at nytimes.com
